Auckland Council’s Building Consents department has an opportunity for a Senior Building Surveyor within the Building Field Surveying team – North West. Reporting to the Team Leader Field Surveying, this role is pivotal in shaping the quality and consistency of building inspections across the region.
As a Senior Building Surveyor, you’ll not only manage complex inspection work and projects, but also play a key role in mentoring and coaching inspectors, ensuring technical excellence, and supporting the resolution of challenging compliance issues. You will be field based but with access across our Henderson and Albany hubs, working closely with stakeholders, builders, developers, and designers to provide expert advice and guidance.
This is a role where your technical expertise, leadership, and customer focus will directly contribute to safer, compliant, and high-quality building outcomes for Auckland.
Day-to-day you could expect to work on:
- Managing complex inspection work and projects, including on-site negotiations with stakeholders
- Providing expert technical advice to industry, building owners, and colleagues – including undertaking peer reviews and contributing to quality assurance across the region
- Coaching, mentoring, and supporting inspectors to build capability and confidence
- Inspecting building work to ensure compliance with the Building Code, Building Act 2004, and consented documentation
- Identifying risks, resolving complex issues, and escalating matters where required
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and contributing to strategic projects
He kōrero mōu: About you
This role requires extensive relevant experience in similar building surveying roles, with a deep understanding of the Building Code, Building Act 2004, and construction principles. You’ll be confident in managing complex inspections, resolving disputes & navigate negotiations effectively, and providing clear, customer-focused advice both internally and externally.
You’ll also be a natural mentor, someone who enjoys sharing knowledge, guiding others, and lifting the capability of the team. Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills are essential, along with the ability to balance technical detail with a customer-first approach.
We will be looking for specific experience with:
- Holds at least Comm 2 competency and is either working towards or has already achieved Comm 3
- Extensive knowledge of building design, construction, and inspection processes
- Strong technical understanding of the Building Code and Building Act 2004
- Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop others in a professional setting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and competing priorities
- A relevant qualification such as the National Diploma in Building Control Surveying (or equivalent), or working towards this, with 8–10 years’ experience in the industry
- A clean and full NZ Driver’s Licence

The remuneration range for this role is $102,595 - $108,000 (Based on skills & experience)
