Lifeguard | West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre (Henderson)


Auckland Council’s Pools and Leisure has two opportunities for Lifeguard positions at our busy West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre (Henderson):

  • Permanent Full Time (40 hours/week)
  • Permanent Part Time (16 hours/week)

Working as a lifeguard is an opportunity for you to make a real difference in the community. Lifeguards are the key to ensuring a safe environment for our customers and are essential to the successful running of our aquatic facilities.

 

As a lifeguard, you are responsible for:

  • Provide a safe environment through proactive supervision and positive interaction with customers
  • Educate and enforce pool rules
  • Respond to any First Aid emergencies
  • Ensure pool and surrounds are clean at all times

 

16 hour position:

  • Monday 5:00pm-9:00pm
  • Tuesday 5:00pm-9:00pm
  • Sunday 10:30am-7:00pm

 

40 hour position:

  • Tuesday – Friday 1:30pm-10:00pm
  • Saturday 11:00am-7:30pm
     

The shifts are subject to change according to the roster and the needs of the centre, so flexibility is essential. There will be additional roles going up over the coming weeks.
Our centre operates from 6:00am - 7:00pm on weekends and 5:30am - 09:30pm on weekdays; the ability to work early night, late night, and weekends is crucial. 
 
 
He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for strong swimmers of all ages, who are dedicated to helping others and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment. As a lifeguard, you’ll need to stay alert, work well in a team, and provide excellent customer service.

 

You will also need to have a current First Aid Certificate and Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC); however, training will be provided. If you do not have a current First Aid Certificate or Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate, you will need to attend a 2-week training course from 7th April to 17th April (Weekdays 8:30am - 4:00pm) at CBD and West Wave.
 
 
The first step in becoming a lifeguard for Auckland Council is passing the swim test, which consists of:

  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes (Any stroke, or a mixture of strokes, can be used) 
  • Swim 50m breaststroke
  • Swim 25m sidestroke
  • Retrieve objects from the deepest part of the pool (depth varies across centres)
  • Tread water for 5 minutes
