He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Governance and Engagement Department has an opportunity for a Democracy Advisor to join the Western Local Boards support team.

You will be based in the New Lynn and Henderson local board offices and we offer some flexibility to work from home or at other local board offices.

Local boards make local decisions on behalf of their communities.  They provide leadership and engage with the public on a broad range of community and regional issues.  This is a critical role for decision-making which spans across all local government services, Council Controlled Organisations and local communities.

As a Democracy Advisor, you will be the governance expert with a primary focus on supporting and advising Western Local Board members (with a focus on the Whau Local Board) and the local board team on core democratic services.

Local board support roles enjoy a wide variety of work.  You could expect to work on:

  • scheduling and preparing for public meetings, forums and workshops and notifying attendees, and producing high quality agendas, minutes and workshop records
  • monitoring and following up resolutions from meetings and action points from workshops within the organisation
  • supporting other team members in scheduling, organising and delivery of local board community consultation or engagement meetings and events

He kōrero mōu: About you

You will work alongside Local Board Members, senior management and representatives from Tāmaki Makaurau’s diverse communities; therefore, confidence, political acumen and good judgement are essential for your success in the role.

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, has a high degree of initiative, with the ability to balance competing demands.

This role requires flexibility as some meetings are in the evenings.

We will also be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

  • excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships with the Local Board members, colleagues across the organisation and community groups
  • good understanding of local government legislation, Council practices and constraints
  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • experience with Council systems would be a bonus.

We still encourage you to apply if you have some but not all these requirements.
