Based in the CBD, Auckland Council’s Specialist Unit is a multi-disciplinary team within the Council’s Regulatory Services Directorate. The unit provides specialist advice to support the Council’s regulatory functions, primarily relating to the Resource Management Act (RMA) and the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP). A key function of the unit is to provide specialist assessment and advice with particular emphasis on Resource Consents and Licencing and Regulatory Compliance activity.

We also play a role assisting our colleagues in the monitoring and compliance teams, influencing policy, and designing and providing training to Regulatory Services (planners, compliance staff and development engineers). We are privileged to work on projects across the entire Auckland region and are passionate about preventing and minimising negative environmental and health effects whilst promoting sustainable development in our fast-growing city. 


He angitūtanga: The opportunity


You will be working with a wide range of customers across the region, providing technical input to our resource consenting, compliance and building teams. You will be expected to work collaboratively to seek the best practical environmental outcomes using a proactive, proportionate and solution-driven approach. You must be competent in critically evaluating complex proposals in consent applications.


We have 4 amazing opportunities:

Specialist (Contamination Air & Noise)
In this role you will be providing specialist technical input assessing environmental and human health effects associated with activities that discharge into air and activities on contaminated land. The role also has scope to upskill in other disciplines within the team. 


Specialist (Stormwater Wastewater & Industrial Trade Activities)
In this role you will be providing specialist technical input around managing the effects of discharges to land and/or water including works in and around freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands). This position also deals with rural production discharges, biosolids and other contaminants of discharge.


Specialist (Earth, Streams & Trees)
In this role you will be providing specialist, technical input into managing the effects of significant earthworks and works in and around freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands).


Senior Specialist (Earth Streams & Trees)
We are seeking an industry expert and highly skilled freshwater ecologist, with a proven capability in negotiation and influencing skills. You’ll be  working with a wide range of customers across the region, assessing and providing specialist technical freshwater ecological input around managing the effects of works in and around freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands). As a Senior, you will be providing specialist technical input into the more significant and technically complex resource consenting as well as coaching and mentoring colleagues within the team.

You are competent in problem solving and finding innovative solutions to technical issues or problems. The ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to a wide range of audiences is critical as you will be regularly liaising with internal and external customers. You will have worked within a busy professional environment and have excellent time management and project management skills. You are flexible and open to change, including new ways of doing things and upskilling to work on subjects beyond contaminated land. 

What you’ll need to succeed
•    A tertiary qualification in science, environmental science, resource management, environmental health or equivalent.
•    5 or more years' experience in a relevant role. 
•    Proven experience in the respective role you wish to apply would be an advantage. 
•    Experience and understanding of relevant sections of the Resource Management Act and relevant local and national standards and policies. 

•    A current full NZ driver’s licence
