A fantastic opportunity has arisen for two Summer Gardeners to join the horticultural team and learn the ropes at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. This is a great opportunity to follow your passion for plants and gain relevant career experience.


This is a 12-week fixed-term role, starting in mid-late November 2024 through to early February 2025.
 
Day-to-day you could expect to:

  • Work alongside Botanic Gardens staff to manage and maintain the plant collections and amenity gardens
  • Help ensure the plant collections and amenity gardens meet agreed presentation standards
  • Learn more about plants, their cultivation and how the worlds of garden design, conservation and horticultural science intersect
  • Help provide support to the Botanic Gardens nursery, trials, visitor services and botanical services staff

If you are currently studying or have studied in the field of horticulture or have an interest in plants, nature, and the outdoors, then we want to hear from you! 


We will be looking for someone with specific experience in:

  • Horticulture – basic practical horticulture skills, a passion for plants, working outside and a thirst for learning more about horticulture and botanic gardens
  • Have excellent verbal skills for communicating with a diverse range of visitors to the Botanic Gardens
  • Have a positive, can-do attitude

 
Experience in horticulture and handling small machinery would be advantageous, but training will be provided to the successful candidate.  Preference will be given to applicants who have a clean and full NZ driver’s licence. You must be comfortable in a physical role, love working outdoors in all sorts of weather and be willing to do all sorts of jobs!
