Join Auckland Council’s Regulatory Engineering team and play a key role in shaping Auckland’s development. We ensure public infrastructure is designed and built to standard by assessing engineering designs, monitoring construction, and controlling quality for around $150 million of new infrastructure assets vested to Council each year. Consenting is a fast-paced environment, and our work varies from small scale private residential, right up to large scale subdivisions and commercial projects. In this fast-paced environment, we work closely with asset owners like Auckland Transport, Watercare, Healthy Waters, and Parks, regulating projects to ensure safe, efficient, and well-planned growth across the region.
He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We are recruiting for a practically minded Principal Engineer with senior-level expertise in civil land development and a thorough understanding of the Resource Management Act, Building Act, and Local Government Act. You will need to be experienced working with Auckland’s Unitary Plan (AUP) and Auckland Design Manual, with the ability to clearly interpret and apply relevant standards across a variety of development scenarios. Your technical expertise and excellent communication skills will enable you to provide credible leadership and guidance to our Land Development Engineers.
From an internal operations side, you will play a key part in strengthening the delivery and effectiveness of our engineering consenting processes, working closely with a large team, technical specialists, and partners across the Council and development community. You will be confident making decisions, providing feedback, auditing work, and developing training materials to support and grow the team’s capability.

Key must-haves to be eligible for this role include:
- A tertiary qualification in civil engineering.
- 10+ years civil land development expertise.
- Deep experience and practical knowledge of the RMA, Building Act, Local Government. Legislation and Auckland Design Manual, and other national standards and best practices.
- Highly developed interpersonal and relationship skills.
- Experience providing guidance and delivering training.
- Desire to work with Māori and within Māori Paradigms.
