Lead Recreation Assistant
 

Do you have a passion for working in the outdoors with all age groups, giving participants the opportunity to interact with the natural world, discover and learn, be active with others and take on new challenges?
 
The Outdoor Experience Team within Council’s Active Recreation Unit provides
a range of outdoor recreation programmes for school students and community groups across the Auckland region.

 

This is a fulltime permanent role; rostered over 7 days per week including weekends and you will be based in Otara.
 
This role will emphasize learning through experience with activities such as
kayaking, raft building, bike riding, archery, bushcraft, outdoor cooking, orienteering, environmental awareness, team building events and some overnight camps.


This is an exciting opportunity within Council’s Active Recreation Unit to provide young people and families with opportunities for connection, personal development and enrichment.
 


He kōrero mōu: About you
 

We are seeking a qualified Instructor with proven teaching & facilitation skills which have been developed over time in the field. In this role you will provide expertise and leadership in outdoor programme delivery, while working effectively with a small instructor team. We are particularly seeking an instructor experienced in coastal kayaking and recreational biking.

 

You will need the ability to work closely with the Site Leader and take responsibility for liaising with teachers and community leaders, developing programmes, providing quotes and written plans and enhancing on-going customer relationships.

 

To be successful, you will have a depth of knowledge across a range of outdoor activities and the ability to design & deliver flexible programmes based on the needs & expectations of the participants in school and community settings.

An understanding of cultural diversity and appreciation of Māori tikanga is an important attribute.


You will also have significant involvement in ensuring instructors understand and follow the current safety management system. You will hold a NZOIA Kayak Award (or equivalent) and have experience in bike instruction.
 

You will need a full driver's licence and have the ability to drive manual vans and tow trailers. A current First Aid qualification is mandatory and pre-employment drug-testing and police vetting are requirements.

Working with the Outdoor Experience team will give you the opportunity to contribute to community-based activities and experiential learning with students. You will be able to focus on active outdoor recreation and positively influence the well-being of youth and families.
 
The small Outdoor Experience team will provide you with a great opportunity to further develop your skills in customer interaction, leadership, and facilitation.
 
You will also be a part of the wider Leisure network with a focus on staff development and continuous improvement. You will have access to staff benefits such as a membership to council pool and fitness centres.
