We’re looking for a practical, hands-on individual to join our team in a permanent Landscape and Asset Maintenance Technician role at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
This is more than just a gardening job — it’s a chance to be the go-to handyman and all-rounder who helps keep our grounds, assets, and infrastructure in top shape. From fixing fences and maintaining pathways to supporting seasonal planting and general upkeep, your work will directly contribute to the smooth running and visual appeal of one of Auckland’s most loved public spaces.

This role has a remuneration range of $65,000 - $73,000 depending on experience and skillset.

This role plays a vital part in maintaining the beauty, safety, and functionality of Auckland Botanic Gardens. By caring for green assets and supporting the horticultural team, you help ensure that the gardens remain a welcoming and inspiring space for all visitors. Your contribution directly supports the preservation of plant collections, enhances the visitor experience, and upholds the high standards expected of one of Auckland’s most treasured public spaces.
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
In this role, you’ll contribute to the effective management of green assets by capturing and entering field data for asset condition grading and supporting curators and gardeners in maintaining key plant collections. You may also occasionally supervise apprentices and volunteers, helping foster a collaborative and skilled team environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Carry out maintenance programmes for green space assets including paths, edging, seating, retaining walls, fencing, and graffiti removal.
- Maintain lawns using equipment such as Toro and Walker mowers.
- Operate and maintain tools and machinery for mowing, edging, litter control, and general grounds upkeep.
- Maintain the track network across the gardens.
- Undertake pest control activities including possum trapping and rat bait station management.
- Apply agricultural chemicals safely and effectively as required.

You’re physically active and enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions. Comfortable with manual tasks, you bring a genuine interest in landscape and asset maintenance, along with a willingness to learn and grow in the role.
Your strong communication and teamwork skills help you thrive in a collaborative environment, and you’re confident engaging with visitors when needed. You’re also available to work weekends and public holidays as part of a roster system, with appropriate notice provided.
We are looking for:
- A minimum of 3–5 years of practical experience in hard landscaping, green asset maintenance, or related fields such as construction, property development, or farming
- Experience in open space mowing; tractor operation is preferred
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with field data collection apps
- A full and valid New Zealand Driver’s Licence
- Growsafe certification is desirable (training can be provided if needed)
