Environmental Health Officer

Auckland Council’s Food & Health Licensing team has an opportunity for an Environmental Health Officer to join either our South, Central or Northwest Team. This role plays a key part in protecting public health by supporting safe food practices, licensing health and hygiene operators, and ensuring our communities can trust the places they eat, visit, and work in. You’ll help businesses understand their obligations, encourage voluntary compliance, and contribute to a safer, healthier Tāmaki Makaurau.

You’ll be part of a supportive team that values professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Your work will directly support Council initiatives to maintain, protect, and enhance the wellbeing of Aucklanders.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

• Inspecting and verifying registered food businesses to ensure compliance with legislation, regulations, and bylaws
• Registering food businesses and licensing health and hygiene operators
• Completing scheduled inspections and managing your workflow to meet KPIs and service levels
• Building strong relationships with business owners, Police, Public Health, and industry stakeholders
• Identifying and escalating compliance or enforcement issues when required
• Maintaining accurate inspection, verification, and time records, while contributing to ongoing improvements within our Quality Management System

This role requires experience in similar environmental health roles, with a sound understanding of food safety, public health legislation, and regulatory compliance. You’ll bring a calm, solutions-focused approach, strong communication skills, and the ability to build trust with a wide range of people. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and you’re motivated by helping businesses succeed while keeping the public safe.

You’ll thrive in a busy environment, be highly organised, and have the resilience to maintain positivity and professionalism under pressure. A strong customer service ethic and sense of ownership will help you succeed in this role.

We will be looking for specific experience with:

• Applying health and food legislation, regulations, bylaws, and codes of practice while conducting inspections, verifications, and compliance assessments
• Problem solving and managing escalated or complex issues
• Building effective relationships and communicating clearly with diverse audiences
• Working within an IANZ-accredited or similar quality management system
• Holding a recognised tertiary qualification in environmental health (as per the Environmental Health Officers Qualifications Regulations 1993)
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental health or equivalent inspection/verification roles
• Working within an IANZ‑accredited or similar quality management system while maintaining accreditation as an Approved Verifier (ISO or MPI approved)

Due to the nature of the role, a current and clear NZ driver licence will be required.

The remuneration range of the role is $88,528 - $93,000 per annum (based on skills and experience) 

Our employer Kiwisaver contribution is additional to base salary offered.
