He angitūtanga: The Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Shelter Officer to join our team to support Animal Management’s primary focus of keeping Aucklanders safe from animal related nuisance and harm. This shelter officer role is essential in ensuring professional and timely service for our customers as well as ensuring the well-being of all dogs in our shelter. Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Complete office tasks such as processing paperwork, serving customers, cash handling, facilitating adoptions and educational initiatives.
- Reunite lost dogs with their owners via different methods in line with shelter processes
- Build and maintain exceptional relationships with both internal and external customers including vets and affiliated rescue groups.
- Ensure all animals receive proper care, including feeding, exercise, and enrichment activities.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for all shelter staff and animals.
- Ability to assist the vet with various tasks including euthanasia’s.
- Follow up on the requirements imposed by the Dog Control Act 1996.
This is a primarily office-based role but will still require an element of care and cleaning for the dogs in our care. This can be physically demanding that requires you to be on your feet for most of the day and involves significant cleaning duties. It is also a highly rewarding role where you will work in a small team with other like-minded people whilst contributing positively to the lives of dogs and their owners. There is room for professional development within the team and wider Animal Management unit.

To succeed in this role, you will need:
- Ability to work one weekend day and public holidays as required.
- Physical stamina to handle the demands of the job.
- Previous experience in an office, call centre or an administration role is preferred.
- Applicants with animal handling or husbandry experience will be highly considered.
