Auckland Council Group Shared Services is going through an exciting and significant technology transformation. We are moving our technology into a modern composable architecture, updating aging systems to fit-for-purpose, component-based systems with a strong focus on customer experience and data. This is a unique opportunity to work across multiple entities to form shared services, collaborating for a stronger Auckland and changing our city for the better. 

We are looking for an experienced Principal Architect - Data to lead the evolution of our data landscape. Reporting to the Head of Architecture your immediate focus will be on establishing the foundational shared data platforms for Auckland Council group. You will define the architectural vision and drive the technical runway that transforms our data capabilities into a core strategic asset for serving our communities. 

 

 

He kōrero mōu: About you 

To be successful in this role, you will be a passionate advocate for data as a strategic enabler, with a proven track record in designing and governing data ecosystems in a complex, multi-entity organisation.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop, own, and communicate the technical vision, strategy, and architectural runway for Group Shared Services - Data Services. 

  • Provide expert architectural leadership for establishing the group's modern data platforms, including data governance, analytics, and business intelligence solutions. 

  • Define the architecture for managing the full spectrum of council's data assets, including structured, unstructured, records, and spatial data. 

  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Architecture, Product Managers, and other Principal Architects to guide investment decisions and manage technical debt. 

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to System Architects and Agile teams, ensuring solutions are stable, scalable, and efficient. 

  • Champion continuous improvement and innovation within the data space. 

  • Honour te Tiriti o Waitangi and embed Te Ao Māori principles in our data architecture and technology delivery. 

Skills and Experience 

  • Technical Expertise: 

  • 10+ years of experience in a technology architecture role, with proven success designing and implementing enterprise-scale data architectures in a large, complex organisation. 

  • Expertise in modern data platforms (e.g., cloud-based data warehouses, data lakes), data governance frameworks, and master data management. 

  • Experience with records management and spatial data management is desirable. 

  • Familiarity with SAFe/Agile methodologies and governing a technical runway. 

  • Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: 

  • Strong strategic leadership skills with the ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable architectural solutions. 

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and influence at all levels, including executive leaders and external partners. 

  • An influential and collaborative leadership style, with experience mentoring and guiding high-performing technical specialists. 

  • A strong commitment to honouring te Tiriti o Waitangi and contributing to positive Māori outcomes.
