He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Here at Auckland Council, our leisure centres play a vital role in achieving our vision of making Auckland the most active city in the world. We’re looking for part-time Learn to Swim Instructors to join our Pool and Leisure Centre teams across Auckland and help bring this vision to life.

Based at Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain a formal qualification while teaching people the fundamental principles of swimming. You’ll help create a fun, caring, and safe environment for our customers and visitors and we’ll provide all the training you need to succeed in the role.

This is a permanent part-time 7 hours per week role. Shifts below:

  • Tuesday and Thursday (3.15pm-6.45pm)

You will be required to attend a two‑week training programme, Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

  • July – specific dates and location will be confirmed during the interview process

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’re a confident swimmer and engaging instructor with a genuine love of the water. You bring strong customer service skills and can communicate clearly and confidently with people from all walks of life. Most importantly, you’re passionate about working with our diverse community and making a positive difference through what you do.

If you already hold a recognised swim teaching qualification or have previous experience as a Swimming Instructor, that’s fantastic but it’s not essential. We provide full, comprehensive training to support your success in the role. You’ll also need to be willing to complete First Aid training.

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong swimming ability and confidence in the water
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • A passion for teaching and engaging with a diverse community
  • Willingness to complete First Aid training (training provided)

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

As a Learn to Swim Instructor, you’ll have free access to our facilities, hours that provide work-life balance, and above all else, you will be part of a fun and supportive team. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing the work you do is important and impactful, especially the pride and joy you will get from watching someone gain the confidence that comes from learning how to swim.

At Auckland Council, you will join a dynamic, supportive environment where your mahi (work) will directly impact the lives of over 1.7 million Aucklanders. We offer flexible working conditions, a focus on well-being, and a culture of continuous improvement.

We are proud to be recognised for our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We are accredited by GenderTick, a signatory of the Pride Pledge. These commitments reflect our ongoing efforts to create a workplace where all staff feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
