He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Here at Auckland Council, our leisure centres play a key role in achieving our goal of getting Auckland to be the most active city in the world. And right now, we’re looking for part-time Learn to Swim Instructors to join our Pool and Leisure Centre teams across Auckland to help achieve that goal!

Based at Albany Stadium Pool, this is a fantastic job where you can gain a formal qualification teaching people the basic principles of how to swim, maintaining a fun, caring and safe environment for customers and visitors - we'll provide the training you need to succeed in the role. Experience in teaching infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children is strongly preferred.

We would love to hear from those who can work 12 hours per week and eager to learn. All training is provided, shifts below:

  • Sunday 8.15AM - 1.00PM
  • Wednesday 3.15PM – 7.30PM
  • Thursday 3.15PM – 7.30PM

You will need to attend a 2-week training at West wave during the holiday break (January 2026). Dates will be confirmed during the interview.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You are a great swimmer and instructor, have a love of water, have exceptional customer service skills, and can communicate well with members of the public. Just a passion to work with our diverse community while also making a difference.

If you do have a recognised swim teacher qualification or previous experience as a Swimming Instructor, that would be fantastic! However, we will provide full, comprehensive training.  You must also be willing to complete First Aid training.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

As a Learn to Swim Instructor, you’ll have free access to our facilities, hours that provide work-life balance, and above all else, you will be part of a fun and supportive team. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing the work you do is important and impactful, especially the pride and joy you will get from watching someone gain the confidence that comes from learning how to swim.

At Auckland Council, you will join a dynamic, supportive environment where your mahi (work) will directly impact the lives of over 1.7 million Aucklanders. We offer flexible working conditions, a focus on well-being, and a culture of continuous improvement.

We are proud to be recognised for our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We are accredited by GenderTick, a signatory of the Pride Pledge. These commitments reflect our ongoing efforts to create a workplace where all staff feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
