He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Situated in our Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre, as a Recreation Assistant, no two days will be the same! You’ll help us deliver an exciting range of community fitness and school holiday programmes.


In this frontline role, your responsibilities will include, delivering exceptional customer service to our customers and visitors supporting with the delivery of a variety of exciting programmes for children aged 5-12, helping the Centre maintains a caring, fun, and safe fitness and leisure environment, providing assistance to Centre management with administration and operational duties; and supporting with Centre activities including sporting leagues and daily timetabled programmes.

You’ll already be passionate about sports and recreation, and ready to step into a frontline customer service role. It goes without saying that you’ll be responsible when it comes to working with children. You’ll have a flexible approach and be able to use your initiative to facilitate suitable programmes for kids. An enthusiastic team player, you’ll have a positive attitude and infectious energy, and be committed to providing your customers with an exceptional experience. 


Ideally, you’ll hold a First Aid Certificate and have an understanding of health and safety procedures. While previous experience working with children is beneficial, it’s not essential. Importantly, you’ll be committed to maintaining a high degree of professionalism in your work.


This role will be centered around our rock wall climbing activities as part of our recreational programs, including briefing customers on belaying and maintaining safe practice, so experience in rock climbing is advantageous. You'll also have some basic reception duties and assist in our Summer School Holiday programme so customer focus and group leadership will also be advantageous.

This is a permanent part-time opportunity with a variable roster across the week, so you will need to work flexible hours as and when needed, including weekends, early starts and late finishes.
