Auckland Council’s Governance & Engagement department is looking for a Local Board Advisor to join our team on a fixed-term, full-time basis until December 2026.

 

This role is an exciting opportunity to support the Upper Harbour Local Board and be part of a team that plays a vital role in shaping local communities. You will be based at the Hawiti Albany office and the Upper Harbour Local Board office. There are opportunities to work flexibly from home or at other local board offices, however the preference is for the team is to work together at the Upper Harbour Local Board office.

 

This is a critical role for decision-making which spans across all local government services, Council Controlled Organisations and local communities.

 

You could expect to work on:
•    Development & coordination of local board feedback related to regional strategies and plans
•    Tailor strategic advice to progress more complex & challenging issues and projects 
•    Support the Local Area Manager and Senior Local Board Advisor with political guidance and governance advice
•    Support local board meetings, workshops and agenda run-throughs.

As a Local Board Advisor, you’ll be a trusted source of strategic advice and play a key role in influencing and supporting decision-making at the local level. You will be politically savvy, with the ability to build strong relationships with elected members, other local boards, council departments, and community stakeholders.

 

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring experience from working within large, complex, and ideally politically sensitive environments. You’ll be comfortable navigating competing priorities, managing a high volume of work, and exercising sound judgment in a dynamic context.

 

While you’ll be part of a supportive and committed team, we’re looking for someone who is also self-motivated, proactive, and able to take initiative to work independently.

 

We are specifically looking for:
•    A tertiary qualification in public policy, planning, public management, humanities, finance, law, or a related field – or equivalent industry experience
•    Proven experience in governance, policy, or a closely related discipline
•    Strong relationship-building and communication skills
•    Demonstrated ability to prioritise and manage workloads, oversee programme delivery, and balance competing demands
