Takapuna Library is the only fully integrated library and council services site on the North Shore, providing both professional library services and frontline council support from one welcoming community space.

Te hiranga o tēnei mahi: Why this role matters

Libraries play a vital role in supporting literate, active, and connected communities. As a Library and Council Services Assistant, you help ensure people can access information, council services, learning opportunities, and inclusive public spaces—often at important moments in their lives. This role contributes to creating welcoming environments where people of all backgrounds feel safe, supported, connected to their community, and able to participate fully in civic and community life. You’ll be part of a service that makes Auckland more accessible, informed, and inclusive every day.

Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide frontline library and council services in person, by phone, and online
  • Assist customers to understand and access council services, including rates enquiries, dog registrations, applications, bookings, and regulatory information
  • Deliver professional, calm, and empathetic customer service in a busy public‑facing environment
  • Support professional library practice, including reader engagement, learning programmes, reference interactions, and digital inclusion
  • Promote self‑service and support customers to build confidence using online council and library tools
  • Contribute to the delivery of library programmes, events, and activities that meet diverse community needs
  • Help maintain safe, welcoming, and inclusive library spaces
  • Use council and library systems accurately and responsibly
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, sharing learning and supporting continuous improvement

He kōrero mōu: About you

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. You don’t need to meet every requirement listed — what matters most is your ability to contribute positively to our team, our customers, and our community. You might bring transferable skills from customer service, community work, education, retail, hospitality, or other people‑focused roles.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys working with people in a customer‑focused environment
  • Communicates clearly, respectfully, and with empathy
  • Is comfortable learning systems, processes, and new information
  • Values libraries as inclusive spaces that support literacy, learning, and belonging
  • Demonstrates resilience and professionalism when supporting customers experiencing stress or change
  • Is digitally confident and willing to support others to build digital skills
  • Works collaboratively and contributes to a positive team culture
  • Shows interest in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori, and tikanga Māori
  • Is committed to ongoing learning and professional development

Working towards a library‑related qualification, or an interest in building a career in libraries and information services, is an advantage but not essential.

At Auckland Council, you’ll be part of an organisation that serves over 1.7 million Aucklanders and supports staff to do meaningful, purpose‑driven work.

We offer:
