He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Our pool and leisure facilities are more popular than ever, and as Lead Lifeguard at our Albany Stadium Pool, you will play a key role in ensuring all customers not only have a fantastic experience, but a safe one.
Your main responsibilities will include the following:
- Providing guidance on and supporting the delivery of aquatics-based programmes
- General lifeguarding duties to ensure customers are safe and looked after
- Supporting the Team Leader with day-to-day operations at the Centre
This is a permanent part-time role of 20 hours per week. As our centre operates seven days a week, the ability to work early and late shifts, as well as weekends, is essential for this role. Shifts are outlined below:
- Sunday (11am-7:30pm), Monday (5am-1:30pm), and Thursday (4 hours admin)
You will be required to attend the following training dates. Monday to Friday at West Wave, 8am-4pm:

You’ll have a passion for aquatics and enjoy sharing your knowledge and experience with customers and colleagues to help improve water safety. You will be an excellent communicator, committed to delivering exceptional aquatic programmes, and providing a high level of customer satisfaction.
Joining an energetic and passionate team, you’ll be a keen team player with a flexible approach and the ability to take initiative to help drive a positive safety culture.
We are looking for people who are strong swimmers, dedicated to helping others. To work as a pool, lead lifeguard in New Zealand, you will need to hold a Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC).
The first step in becoming a lifeguard with Auckland Council is successfully passing a swim test. Please only apply for this position if you feel confident that you can:
- Swim 200m in under 6 minutes
- Swim 25m sidestroke
- Swim 50m breaststroke
- Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool
- Tread water for 5 minutes
Also, you must also be willing to complete First Aid training.
