He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Horticulturist to join our team at Auckland Botanic Gardens. This is an exciting permanent part time (16 hours) opportunity for to maintain our newest space, the Platt Arboretum, Greenhithe. You would manage the trees, gardens and property across 2x days a week.
You will be required to collaborate with Botanic Garden gardening staff in maintaining and developing our plant collections and other garden areas. In this role, you’ll will maintain and enhance our diverse plant collections, contribute to the development of new garden spaces, and inspire visitors with your enthusiasm for the natural world.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintenance of trees, grounds and amenity gardens using a variety of plant and equipment
- Ensure the appropriate plant introductions are made and all plants are labelled (where required)
- Maintain records of all data relevant to the gardens
- Liaise with garden visitors, friends, volunteers, iwi, stakeholders and commercial users to conserve plants relevant to the portfolio
- Conserve plants relevant to the portfolio in collaboration with DOC, Iwi, and stakeholders
- Maintain turf (including open space mowing) and assist as required with maintenance of structures & hard landscaped areas

This role has a remuneration range of $70k - $75k pro rata across the duration, depending on experience and skillset.

If you have the passion for working outdoors, are physically fit and happy to get your hands dirty no matter the weather, then this is the role for you! You will also need to work independently on most occasions. It would also be beneficial if you had some previous horticultural experience or a horticultural qualification; and have an interest in growing and caring for native and exotic plants.
