Auckland Council is looking for an Environmental Monitoring Officer to join our team, ensuring the effective monitoring, compliance, and enforcement of resource consents. This role is critical in achieving positive environmental outcomes for Auckland by managing resource consent compliance, addressing breaches, and supporting remediation activities. This is a full-time, permanent position working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with a competitive salary and benefits package, offering a rewarding opportunity to contribute to Auckland's environmental management and sustainability initiatives.

 

Are of this role is in North West Auckland and office based in Albany.

 

He kōrero mōu:  About You

To succeed in this role, you will bring at least 2+ years of experience in planning, environmental compliance, or regulatory environments, ideally within a local government setting. You will hold a relevant tertiary qualification in fields such as Risk/Compliance Management, Environmental Science, Law, or a related area. A strong understanding of regulatory compliance best practices is essential, along with a proven customer service ethic and the ability to develop innovative solutions. Familiarity with the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Local Government Act 2002 is crucial, as well as the ability to effectively manage resource consents and handle enforcement actions. You must be eligible for a Warrant under both the Resource Management Act 1991 and Local Government Act 2002. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential to collaborate effectively with internal and external teams.

 

 Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor active resource consents and ensure compliance with agreed processes.
  • Provide feedback for continuous improvement of monitoring services.
  • Contribute to business improvements and targeted initiatives to reduce environmental risks.
  • Develop and manage enforcement plans for non-compliance cases.
  • Conduct mediation and provide guidance to consent holders for achieving compliance.
  • Support the wider team with mentoring and fostering a positive collaborative culture.
  • Collaborate with other teams to achieve strategic environmental outcomes.

 

Job Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (Risk/Compliance Management, Environmental Science, Law, etc.).
  • 2+ years of experience in environmental compliance or planning.
  • Local Government experience preferred, particularly in a regulatory environment.
  • A current, valid New Zealand driver's license.
  • Eligible to hold a warrant under the Resource Management Act 1991 and Local Government Act 2002.
