Auckland Council’s Development Engineers provide engineering expertise to Building and Resource Consenting teams and assess the design suitability and adequacy of construction on site for new infrastructure being constructed. We work closely with asset owners including Auckland Transport, Watercare, Healthy Waters and Parks to ensure Auckland’s growth and development will be safe.

 

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

As a Development Engineer, your role involves providing expert technical advice and ensuring compliance with a range of legal and engineering standards. You will be responsible for assessing applications and drafting conditions of consent in accordance with the Resource Management Act, Building Act, Bylaws, Unitary Plan, and Council's engineering standards. Utilizing your engineering expertise, you will evaluate Engineering Plan Approval applications, coordinate inputs from specialists and asset owners, and conduct site inspections to verify that new assets meet Council standards. Additionally, you will provide timely assessments of Resource and Building Consent applications, ensuring all necessary information is supplied to future asset owners before subdivision approval is granted.

 

On the operational side, you will maintain up-to-date knowledge of departmental processes and best practices, applying these consistently across your work. Accurate and timely updates to the consents database (SAP) and daily timesheets are crucial. Being proactive in identifying and resolving issues at the first point of contact, and escalating them when necessary, will be key. Furthermore, you will seek opportunities to enhance the timeliness and quality of consent processes, thereby contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the department.

You are a skilled engineer with a strong focus on customer service. You have experience co-ordinating stakeholders, communicate, and manage time well, and you like working in a collaborative team environment. You are someone who wants Auckland to be the best it can be.

 

You like having exposure to a wide variety of work and you want to keep developing and growing your skills through applying your knowledge and experience in practical situations. To be successful in this role, you will have:

 

  • A tertiary qualification in civil engineering
  • Experience in land development market / civil engineering
  • An understanding and knowledge of Resource Management, Building and Local Government Legislation and other issues affecting the delivery of regulatory engineering services
