He angitūtanga: The opportunity
The Events team of the Community Wellbeing department is one of the key customer interfaces of Auckland Council. We work closely with communities to provide services, advice, programmes and events that strengthen and connect communities and create a sense of belonging and pride.
We’re looking for a new Event Organiser to bring their passion and spark and join our great Event Delivery team team in a fixed-term contract. This role is unique as it works across two event delivery teams – the Event Delivery team and the Civic team. in a hybrid delivery capacity.
The role will fall under the direct management of the Manager Event Delivery, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Manager Civic Events and will contribute to the successful planning and execution of events within both streams, each with its own focus and objectives.
As an Event Organiser you’ll have the opportunity to work across multiple divisions within Council, to work closely with local boards, as well as key stakeholders within our communities. You’ll be confident to work independently but also love working in a team to bring our events to life for our communities!
This role liaises with internal and external stakeholders across Tāmaki Makaurau, with a focus on small to medium sized community events. Based in Tāmaki Makaurau, you’ll work with a portfolio of events delivered across the region, as directed by your manager.

Events are one of the most visible and powerful ways Auckland Council connects with our communities. From local community celebrations through to civic ceremonies, our events help build social cohesion, reflect the diversity of Tāmaki Makaurau, and foster a strong sense of place and belonging.
This role is unique in that it operates across two event delivery teams, the Delivery team and the Civic team, in a hybrid delivery capacity. The Event Organiser will work collaboratively within both teams, supporting the distinct focus and objectives of each.
The position reports directly to the Manager Event Delivery, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Manager Civic Events. This dual reporting structure ensures seamless coordination and successful planning and execution of events across both streams.

Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
• Plan, manage and deliver end-to-end Community, Civic and local board events, while contributing to the development of a creative and engaging event program that aligns with strategic organisational objectives.
• Translate event brief and provide technical and creative advice in the development and production of events.
• Ensure all assigned events are delivered in compliance with relevant regulatory, financial, and statutory requirements, including health and safety standards.
• Lead the coordination and delivery of Civic ceremonial protocols on event day, including formal blessings (where iwi partnerships exist), VIP speeches, ribbon cutting, photography, and board-hosted hospitality.
• Moderate public speaking will be required at Citizenship Ceremonies.
• Support the VIPs (e.g. politicians and dignitaries), local board or key stakeholders on the day by cueing speakers, managing formal Civic protocols, facilitating key introductions, and overseeing on-the-ground event operations to ensure smooth delivery.
• The Organiser may be required to present to or attend local board workshops on a specific event.
• Responsible for onsite and operational management including contractors, volunteers, and all logistical components. Maintaining event sites, mitigating any site-related concerns, in liaison with key stakeholders.
• Responsible for assessing the potential risk and de-escalation of conflict or hazards to ensure the health and safety of the public, performers, staff, and suppliers.
• Ensure overall prudent financial management of event budgets.
• Procure and manage contractor resource (staffing, suppliers, volunteers) as required.
• Ensure reporting is completed and communicated with all key stakeholders, including local boards and Governing Body.
• Build and manage strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including local board members, the governing body, iwi mana whenua, vendors, stallholders, commercial partners and contactors.
• Work with Commercial Partnerships and deliver on agreed sponsorship plans.
• Collaborate closely with marketing and communications teams to ensure events are effectively promoted.

We’re looking for a proactive, well organised, people-person with infectious enthusiasm! You’ll have an open communication style and understand we work for the wider Tāmaki Makaurau communities.
Our team has a strong empowering and enabling community focus, which you’ll be able to demonstrate you’re keen to be a part of, as well as bringing the ability to deliver under pressure.
You will have experience in end-to-end event delivery and pride yourself on your excellent time management skills and your ability to prioritise and deliver in a calm professional manner. A good understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori an advantage.
This role requires the successful applicant to work varied hours and days - mornings, evenings and weekends as required. A current full and clean New Zealand Drivers Licence and the ability to travel independently is also essential.
