He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Governance and Engagement Department has a permanent and a fixed term opportunity for Local Board Advisors to join our Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and Manurewa Local Board support teams, respectively.

The permanent role, predominantly based in our Manukau office, supports the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board.

The fixed term opportunity until 30 June 2026, predominantly based in our Manurewa office, supports the Manurewa Local Board.

Both roles offer some flexibility to work from home or at other local board offices.

Local boards make local decisions on behalf of their communities.  They provide leadership and engage with the public on a broad range of community and regional issues.  This is critical for decision-making, and spans across all local government services, Council Controlled Organisations and local communities.

Local board support roles enjoy a wide variety of work and on a day-to-day basis.  You could expect to work on:

  • supporting the local board with political guidance and governance advice
  • developing and coordinating  high-quality local board feedback related to regional strategies and plans
  • tailoring strategic advice to progress more complex and challenging issues and projects
  • providing guidance to the local board support team and other colleagues delivering the board’s programmes

He kōrero mōu: About you

With a tertiary qualification in public policy, public management, humanities, finance, or law, you have a strong background in governance or a related field.  You may have experience in large, complex and political organisations.

Providing strategic advice and influencing stakeholders are at the heart of this role. You will therefore need to be politically savvy with the acumen to work amongst elected members, other local boards and local communities.

You will work with a dedicated team; however, the ability to be self-motivated with a high degree of initiative is key. This role requires the ability to manage and prioritise significant workloads, support work programme delivery, and balance competing demands.
