  • Use your expertise in contract and asset management across built and open spaces

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Parks & Community Facilities (PCF) helps create great places Aucklanders love. We play a vital role in promoting the wellbeing of our communities by delivering essential maintenance and capital programmes across Tāmaki Makaurau. Our passionate team is on the ground daily; building, maintaining, and renewing community buildings and public spaces such as parks, walkways, libraries, and leisure centres.

As the Facilities Manager for the Howick Local Board, you are the subject matter expert for all community facility assets within this area. This diverse portfolio spans urban and semi-rural areas, town centres, buildings, and open spaces across Pakūranga, Howick, Botany, East Tāmaki, and Flat Bush. Within our department, we act as kaitiaki (guardians) of Auckland Council parks and community facilities.

Reporting to the Area Operations Manager, you’ll drive asset and contract performance. Together, we deliver seamless, high-performing facility and parks management through excellent contractor management and communication. Collaboration is key, as you’ll work closely with local board members, community organisations, centre managers, and other stakeholders, always focused on delivering value to our communities.

You’ll be one of four Facilities Managers overseeing the main contract, requiring strong collaboration with your peers to coordinate performance and leverage individual strengths. You’ll also oversee two capable Facilities Coordinators working across the Howick local board portfolio. While they’re not direct reports, you’ll ensure they have clear deliverables, are empowered, engaged, and motivated to succeed, and that their performance improves team results. We want someone who is not afraid to provide advisory or training support to others, because together we grow and improve.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Efficiently and effectively managing maintenance and other requests for service for Council-owned assets across the local board area. These responses need to meet customer expectations and deliver value for the council
  • Managing operational and minor capital expenditure budgets, including contract variations, ensuring value for money and quality
  • Monitoring and reporting on asset condition, faults or failures, and trends, using auditing and dashboard reporting to drive early and continuous improvement
  • Driving high performance from contractors and proactively managing their performance
  • Ensuring all compliance conditions are met on time and the council's assets are safe and secure for users
  • Understanding the customer journey, so keeping customers and stakeholders informed of maintenance works and actively seeking feedback
  • Occasional on-call evening, weekend, and holiday cover will be required to enable 24-hour, 7-day-a-week coverage, in liaison with the Auckland Council customer call centre and the contractor

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’ll bring 7+ years' experience in maintenance delivery, with a strong emphasis on managing complex maintenance programmes, complex asset types, compliance of assets, health and safety of suppliers, and driving high performance and value from suppliers.

Your expertise will span across built and open spaces, alongside practical asset operational management. Technical knowledge in areas such as parks and open space management, horticulture, building compliance, electrical, plumbing, and/or other specialist subject matter areas, including Health and Safety, is essential.

We’d like to see:

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • A robust understanding of contract management
  • Proven capability in budget management and financial tracking
  • The ability to understand data and trends
  • Some leadership or experience mentoring and coaching peers would be an advantage
