An ambitious capital development programme was recently initiated, one which is delivering world-leading new infrastructure across the zoo and a remarkable transformation to much of the site.

 

We are currently seeking an experienced Zoo Veterinarian (permanent, full-time) to provide clinical zoo/wildlife veterinary expertise as a valued member of the Veterinary Services Department at Auckland Zoo, which is located in Auckland Zoo’s New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine. The veterinary team of 10+ zoo professionals work collaboratively to deliver positive Conservation Medicine outcomes for the zoo and for external stakeholders.

 

You will positively contribute to the zoo’s mission in the following core areas of responsibility:

 

  • Providing a high level of veterinary care to the eclectic range of patients (across all major taxonomic classes) including:

 

    • Responsibility for management of routine and emergency cases
    • Formulating and delivering preventative medicine plans
    • Promoting an evidence-based medicine approach to clinical cases
    • Mentoring animal care staff, the Veterinary Resident, and students

 

  • Providing veterinary care/advice to external stakeholders, which may include in-situ conservation projects
  • Utilising well-developed research and analytical skills to contribute to scientific projects and future publications

 

This role involves working 40-hours per week, working on an evenly shared roster as part of a team of four staff veterinarians, who collectively provide 7-day per week on-site cover at Auckland Zoo (including weekends, public holidays and occasional out of hours work).

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

As an experienced member of the Veterinary Services Department you will work closely with the other members of the veterinary team and the rest of the Animal Care & Conservation department to deliver excellent levels of patient care. 

 

You will be knowledgeable, empathetic, resilient and remain solution focussed. As a skilled communicator, you will work well within the supportive and progressive team environment within the department and be able to disseminate knowledge effectively to a wide range of stakeholders. 

 

Core Requirements

 

  • Working as a veterinarian for >6 years, with a wide range of taxa
  • Experience working as a full-time zoo veterinarian (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrable ability to foster positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Successful completion of a zoo veterinary residency (or equivalent) is highly desirable
  • Proven track-record of completed research, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at national and international conferences, is highly desirable
  • Experience with in-situ conservation projects is desirable
  • Familiarity with Z.I.M.S. cloud-based database and other relevant IT programmes is desirable
  • Full driving licence
