He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Waste Planning team has an opportunity for a Waste Planning Advisor (Initiatives) within a 12-month fixed term/secondment in the Waste Planning team.
In this role, you will be accountable for the development, delivery, review, and reporting of the Waste Minimisation & Innovation Fund (WMIF) contestable funding scheme in accordance with the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan and Waste Management Act 2008.
You will also apply your analytical and relationship‑management skills to contribute to WMMP priorities. This includes overseeing waste disposal levy–funded projects through effective contract management, performance monitoring and benefits reporting.

There remuneration range for the role is between $80,640 - $89, 600 depending on experience and skillset.

This role matters because the WMIF is a key mechanism to support sustainable waste outcomes in a growing city. Funding a range of initiatives helps create cleaner, safer communities, reduces pressure on landfill, and ensures residents have access to effective recycling and waste services.
You will work across council teams and with external partners and community stakeholders to help deliver evidence‑based solutions that minimise waste impacts across Auckland.
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
You will support reporting on compliance with legislative requirements and regulations across all Waste Solutions assets and operations and assist the unit in preparing reports for Council Committees, Local Boards, and internal and external stakeholders. You will also provide input on strategic waste‑planning matters, including resource consents and licensing.
Day-to-day you could expect to work on:
- Developing, delivering, reviewing, and reporting on the Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF) contestable funding scheme.
- Help prepare documentation for annual waste‑disposal levy returns, including reporting waste‑minimisation outcomes to the Ministry for the Environment and supporting the external audit process.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Whakatere (which will enhance our ability to Achieve Māori Outcomes) and ensure evaluation frameworks reflect Te Ao Māori perspectives.
- Support the provision of specialist advice on waste issues relating to Multi Unit Developments (MUDs) and building sites, including resource consent applications and waste licencing.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You will have experience managing funding agreements and contracts, along with strong knowledge of waste management and how local government operates, including key drivers and requirements. A working knowledge of relevant legislation, bylaws, and council obligations, particularly the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, Local Government Act 2002, and Litter Act 1979 is key.
The role requires highly developed interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will be able to navigate challenging socio‑political environments with competing priorities and problem‑solve effectively while working autonomously.
We will be looking for specific experience with:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in multi-disciplinary environment and waste sector knowledge
- Strong analytical, report‑writing, and presentation skills with the ability to convey information clearly in formal settings
- Competency with excel
- Valid and current drivers license
