He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

An opportunity has arisen within the Tāmaki Makaurau Design Office (TMDO) for an Urban Design Analyst to support the Design Review Team in delivering high-quality urban design outcomes across Tāmaki Makaurau.

 

Reporting to the Design Review Team Leaders, this role focuses on providing urban design advice on development proposals within the resource consent process. You will contribute to the assessment of projects under the Auckland Unitary Plan supporting the integration of good design outcomes into planning and delivery.

 

You will play a key role in monitoring and reviewing design-related conditions of consent, ensuring that approved developments continue to align with intended design quality outcomes. The role also supports the wider Design Review Team through research, analysis, and input into policy, guidance documents, and plan change processes.

 

Key responsibilities

 

  • Provide urban design analysis and advice on development proposals within the resource consent process

 

  • Support the review and monitoring of design-related conditions of consent

 

  • Contribute to research and analysis to inform urban design policy, guidance, and best practice

 

  • Support inputs into plan changes, strategic initiatives, and place-based projects

 

  • Collaborate with planners, designers, and other specialists to achieve integrated design outcomes

 

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of urban design processes and tools within TMDO

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

You will be organised and able to work well, both independently and in a team environment. You will be adaptable to changes in work programme, apply judgement and manage competing priorities.

 

You will bring:

 

  • Experience or exposure to urban design, planning, or development processes (including resource consents)

 

  • Ability to critically assess development proposals against the Auckland Unitary Plan and urban design principles and frameworks

 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail

 

  • Confidence preparing clear and well-structured written material, including design reports

 

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams

 

  • An understanding of the New Zealand planning context is advantageous

 

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including a willingness to engage with te reo Māori

 

 

The successful applicant must have a tertiary qualification in Urban Design, or, be working towards completing a qualification in urban design.
