He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We are looking for experienced building professionals to join our Capability Team and make a real difference in shaping the skills and expertise of Auckland Council’s Building Consent Authority staff. This team leads competency assessments, technical audits, and the development of technical training materials, working primarily within the Building Act 2004 and Building Regulations 2006 framework (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities).
Reporting to the Team Leader - Assessment, you will play a pivotal role in coaching, mentoring, and developing our technical staff. You will conduct on-site and off-site audits and assessments, deliver targeted training, and ensure our team maintains up-to-date knowledge and technical proficiency. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine your technical expertise with a hands-on approach to developing people, helping to align compliance and quality with current industry practices while making a tangible impact on our team’s growth and capability.
Day-to-day, you will:
- Perform technical assessments of staff against the National Competency Assessment Framework (NCAS).
- Conduct technical audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Analyse audit results, competency outcomes, and staff feedback to identify training needs and develop relevant training plans.
- Collaborate with teams across the region to deliver high-quality training in Building Consents technical functions, ensuring compliance with both BCA accreditation and Technical Audit requirements.
- Participate in delivering training to support consistent inspections and certification, ensuring all technical staff hold the relevant Regulation 18 qualification.

You bring substantial experience in building-related regulatory services, gained through commercial building inspections or plan processing. You possess strong process orientation, complemented by sound judgment and decision-making skills that support continuous business improvement. You are resilient, adaptable, and able to perform effectively in dynamic environments, demonstrating calm and solutions-focused decision-making in complex situations.
You have excellent interpersonal skills, enabling you to build effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Your computer literacy allows you to produce clear and accurate reports, monitor and review statistical data, and conduct research with precision. Ideally, you have already been assessed for Appendix 2 under the National Competency Assessment Framework (NCAS).
We are seeking individuals with the appropriate combination of experience and qualifications. If you hold a current Com 1–3 Building competency, possess advanced knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and Building Act, and have achieved NZ Level 6 or higher, this role provides an excellent opportunity to apply your expertise and contribute to the development and capability of our team.
What we are looking for:
- Strong training, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing staff in Building Consents technical functions.
- Highly developed analytical skills with the ability to carry out technical audits to prescribed standards.
- A qualification recognised by Regulation 18 of the Building Regulations 2006 (Accreditation of Building Consent Authority).
- A minimum of five years’ experience in building inspections and consenting, or at least three years’ experience assessing the competency of technical staff.

This role has a remuneration range of $108,000 – $120,000 (based on skillset and experience)
