Team Coach - Technology Services
He angitūtanga: The opportunity
At Auckland Council, this role is formally known as a Scrum Master. However, we are advertising it as Team Coach to better reflect the intent, capability, and impact we are seeking.
We are looking for someone who goes beyond facilitating team events or supporting delivery execution. This is a hands-on coaching role focused on building self-organising teams, improving system performance, and enabling sustainable, outcome-focused ways of working within one of Aotearoa’s largest and most complex ICT environments.
You will work at the team, product, and system level to improve flow, quality, and value delivery, and you’ll be expected to demonstrate impact through clear outcomes and evidence-based measures. You’ll be part of a wider Scrum Master Practice, contributing to the uplift of agile maturity across Technology Services.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You are an experienced Scrum Master who identifies as a coach, change agent, and systems thinker, not a project manager. You understand that sustainable delivery comes from healthy team dynamics, clear purpose, continuous learning, and intelligent constraints.
You’re comfortable working in complexity. You lean into ambiguity. You use data, observation, and experimentation to guide teams toward better outcomes. Most importantly, you can articulate what changed for your teams because you were there.
You bring at least 5+ years’ experience working as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach in complex environments, with a proven track record of growing teams beyond dependency on you.
In this role, you will:
· Coach teams to become self-managing, cross-functional, and outcome-driven
· Help teams improve flow, predictability, quality, and value, using meaningful metrics (e.g. throughput, cycle time, WIP, team health)
· Observe and challenge unhelpful behaviours, mindsets, and system constraints at team and leadership levels
· Create environments of psychological safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
· Facilitate when it adds value and step back when it doesn’t
· Work closely with Product Owners to strengthen product thinking, backlog quality, and value-based decision making
· Influence beyond the team, helping leaders and stakeholders understand how their decisions impact team effectiveness
· Contribute to the Scrum Master Practice through learning, mentoring, and shaping how agile is applied at scale within Auckland Council
To succeed, you’ll bring:
· A coaching mindset grounded in curiosity and systems thinking
· Demonstrated experience building high-performing, self-organising teams
· Evidence of measurable improvements you’ve enabled (e.g. delivery capability, flow, quality, engagement, or customer outcomes)
· A strong, practical understanding of Scrum and agile principles, and the judgement to know when and how to adapt them
· The confidence to challenge respectfully and influence without authority
· The ability to work hands-on with teams while also seeing and addressing systemic issues
· Relevant agile or coaching qualifications (e.g. Scrum Master, Agile Coaching, systems or leadership coaching) are beneficial but not a substitute for real-world impact
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer
At Auckland Council, you’ll work on initiatives that matter shaping digital services that support Aucklanders every day. You’ll be trusted to do what Scrum Masters are meant to do: focus on people, teams, and the system.
What you can expect:
· A strong and evolving Scrum Master Practice
· Teams and leaders who are genuinely investing in improving how work gets done
· Flexible working options, including remote work
· Opportunities to grow your coaching capability in one of NZ’s most complex ICT ecosystems
· A culture that values inclusion, learning, and thoughtful change over quick fixes
When applying, please include a brief example of how you’ve helped a team become more self-organising or improved outcomes, and how you knew it was working.
