He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council is on a journey to deliver a transformational shift with and for Māori, honouring both the intent and obligations of Te Tiriti o Waitangi while celebrating Māori identity as Tāmaki Makaurau’s unique point of difference in the world. As part of this kaupapa, the Project Manager – Marae Infrastructure role within Te Waka Tai-Ranga Whenua (Parks & Community Facilities) leads meaningful projects that enhance marae and strengthen partnerships across the region. This role plays a pivotal part in delivering physical infrastructure improvements that uphold the mana and aspirations of marae, ensuring they continue to be central hubs for their communities.

In this position, you’ll take ownership of projects from design through to delivery, managing consents, tenders, and construction close-out while engaging closely with marae, council teams, and contractors. Your communication and relationship-building skills will be key to achieving outcomes that reflect both cultural values and community needs. Experience in infrastructure development or maintenance will serve you well, helping you navigate complex projects that make a lasting impact for Māori and the wider Auckland region.

You’re a pragmatic and politically astute professional who knows how to influence outcomes through clear communication and strong relationships. With proven experience delivering maintenance, capital works, or renewal projects within construction, engineering, or architecture, you bring a solid understanding of project and programme management from design through to completion. You’re confident working across multi-disciplinary teams and thrive in environments that require both technical know-how and cultural sensitivity.

You’ll be someone who makes sound decisions under pressure, builds trust quickly, and brings people together to deliver quality results for communities. Collaboration and relationship-building will be at the heart of your approach, supported by a deep respect for Te Ao Māori and an understanding of local and central government processes. Adaptable, thoughtful, and decisive — you’re someone who listens, engages authentically, and brings both expertise and empathy to every project you lead.
