He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Waste Planning team has an opportunity for a Senior Waste Planning Advisor within the Waste Planning team.
In this role you will provide policy and strategic input on plans, bylaws and programmes required to support the delivery of the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP). You will use your people skills and contribute to, and where appropriate lead, the application of technical advice and expertise on strategic WMMP projects.

There remuneration range for the role is between $88,528 - $104,150 depending on experience and skillset.

This role helps ensure Auckland’s growing multi‑unit developments are designed to support efficient, safe, and sustainable waste services. By embedding waste minimisation principles into planning, consenting, and delivery, the role contributes to better recycling outcomes, reduced landfill waste, and well‑functioning communities—supporting Auckland Council’s long‑term environmental goals.
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
Day-to-day you could expect to work on:
- Providing subject matter expertise for resource consent applications in relation to waste collection and storage requirements for residential multi-unit development sites
- Developing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure waste collections from multi-unit residential sites contribute to Auckland’s waste minimisation goals and targets
- Providing strategic input and advice on WMMP and other unit wide work including policy, planning and regulatory processes across the council family
- Support the Waste Solutions Department in reporting to Council Committees, Local Boards, internal and external stakeholders
- Ensuring that strategies and plans are delivered in a timely manner and to a high quality

You may be a planner with waste expertise, or a waste specialist with planning expertise. We are also open to applications with experience in other relevant sectors or roles with the ability to learn quickly. This role requires initiative and enthusiasm, experience developing and maintaining relationships, and the ability to provide policy and strategic advice on legislation, projects, plans and programmes.
We will be looking for specific experience with:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience in multi-disciplinary environment with a track record of delivering outcomes.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills to manage effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Understanding of resource consenting and waste advice on resource consent applications.
