Join Auckland Council’s Planning and Resource Consents Department, a fast-paced, influential team that processes over 17,000 consents each year. We enable everything from major infrastructure and large subdivisions to houses, apartments, and commercial centres. Sitting within the Coastal and Water Allocation team, you will help guide how the city grows responsibly, sustainably, and with respect for the environment beneath our feet.

 

You will provide expert advice on groundwater take and diversion, dewatering, and related geotechnical risks for a range of high-profile, complex developments across the region. This is a rare opportunity to influence and work on technically interesting and environmentally significant projects, helping shape Auckland’s built and natural environment.

As a Senior Specialist, you will also have the opportunity to mentor others, lead thinking, and appear as an expert witness in council and court hearings. As a Specialist, you will be supported to develop and thrive—while working on fascinating, future-facing projects.

Whether you are just stepping into the next phase of your career or bring years of experience, you are someone who loves to problem-solve, think critically, and collaborate with others to create better outcomes.

 

You can critically assess complex information, balance environmental and development goals, and communicate clearly with planners, engineers, applicants, and legal advisors.

 

You bring:

  • A degree in hydrogeology, geotechnical or civil engineering, or environmental science
  • 5+ years (Senior Specialist) experience in groundwater or geotechnical assessments pertaining to dewatering / groundwater diversion, retaining wall construction and associated mechanical settlement effects
  • A customer-focused approach and the communication skills to make the complex clear
  • Knowledge of the Resource Management Act, consenting processes and associated legislation
  • An understanding of Auckland Council’s regulatory framework in relation to groundwater dewatering and diversion would be an advantage
