He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland’s coast, rivers, streams, lakes and groundwater are an integral part of what Aucklanders value in our region. We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Scientist to join us at the forefront of helping sustainably manage Auckland’s water quality for future generations!

Based in Auckland CBD, this role sits within the Water Quality team in Auckland Council's Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU), responsible for monitoring and reporting on Auckland's aquatic environments.  We collect, analyse and evaluate a wide range of environmental data across coastal and freshwater domains, often in collaboration with other agencies and research institutes, to provide high-quality evidence and information to decision makers and Aucklanders. Additionally, we undertake research which underpins policy development in support of water management across Auckland. In this senior role we will value your ability to innovate and help shape and disseminate our growing knowledge base.

Working with our team of scientists and monitoring specialists, you will be responsible for technical leadership and reporting of some of council's water quality monitoring and research programmes. You will play a key role in building council's evidence base as we implement the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management, including participating in national discussions.

He kōrero mōu: About you

Having completed a post graduate degree or equivalent qualification, ideally in environmental science specialising in water quality, you will come to us with an in-depth understanding of water quality science and the emerging issues in water quality.  You have the ability to provide robust technical review in this area, as well as mentor more junior members of the team.

You are familiar with how New Zealand's regulatory framework for water quality is changing, and have established professional networks required to maintain or enhance this understanding.  You are able to manipulate and interpret datasets and communicate complex information effectively to a range of audiences.

We will value your excellent collaboration and inter-personal skills, as you will be working with council-wide teams to better inform decision makers and activities in our region. An understanding of State of our Environment monitoring programme design, and the need for programmes to work synergistically, is desirable.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

We offer you the opportunity to be part of our engaged and supportive RIMU environment teams - a collective of highly skilled professionals who are passionate about the preservation of Auckland’s environment.  Joining RIMU is great for your career and professional profile as you will continue to develop strong networks across the council group and the environmental sector.

See Knowledge Auckland, a website managed by RIMU, for a repository of published research, information, analysis and data about Auckland's communities, economy and environment.
