He angitūtanga: The opportunity
The Senior Risk Advisor plays a key role in strengthening risk management across Group Shared Services (GSS). This is a Line 1 risk role, providing expert advice on implementing and embedding business risk management approaches, supported by robust analysis to assess risk exposure and control effectiveness. Working in partnership with department risk champions and the Line 2 risk team, the role ensures risks are proactively identified, effectively managed, and clearly reported to enable sound oversight and confident decision-making.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analyse risk data to identify trends, root causes, and systemic issues, translating complex information into clear, actionable insights
- Develop and embed a continuous monitoring framework to detect emerging risks and provide assurance over control effectiveness
- Prepare detailed risk reports, dashboards, and presentations for the GSS Board, Leadership Team, and Audit & Risk Committee
- Collaborate across Auckland Council and GSS teams to align risk insights with wider group risk reporting and governance processes
- Monitor emerging strategic, technology, privacy, and governance risks, ensuring ongoing alignment with Auckland Council’s risk framework and continuous
improvement of risk practices

You’ll bring strong analytical capability, sound judgement, and the ability to translate complex information into meaningful insights. As a strong communicator you’ll engage confidently with senior leaders, facilitate productive discussions, and influence effective risk management practices. Your ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams, coupled with a solid understanding of governance and risk frameworks, will be key to driving a proactive and mature risk culture across GSS.
You’ll bring:
- A tertiary qualification in Business, Risk Management, Finance, or a related discipline, and significant experience in risk or governance roles
- Proven analytical and technical expertise in managing risk frameworks, registers, and reporting tools
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to prepare executive-level reports and facilitate cross-functional workshops
- A thorough understanding of risk management and governance practices, ideally gained within the public or shared services sector
