  • Connect people and ideas to deliver greater value in how our open space and community facilities deliver better services to Tāmaki Makaurau

He angitūtanga: The Opportunity

It’s an exciting time for our Regional Service Planning, Investment and Partnerships department. We have recently created a new leadership team to drive directorate-wide change in how we plan and deliver services for the communities of Tāmaki Makaurau and to strengthen our capacity to deliver for Māori.

As a result of a secondment for one our team members, we are seeking expression of interest in the Senior Open Space Planner position within the Service Investment and Programming team. We form an integral part of delivering our Auckland Plan linking our Policy, and Customer and Community Services delivery teams.

Over the next nine months, it is expected that the work programme will include:

  • leading the development of local parks management plans – these plans provide general management policies and park-specific intentions for all local parks within a local board area
  • working closely with the project manager of the Regional Parks Management Plan review on mana whenua engagement and revising the plan as we move through the submissions and hearings stages
  • coaching and providing specialist advice to other planners developing management plans and masterplans

A key focus of the role is to continue to evolve our approach to Auckland’s open space planning to meet the challenges of planning, investing in and managing the largest local and regional parks network in Australasia. Our parks, open spaces and community buildings need to respond to a growing and more diverse Auckland, within the context of a constrained financial environment.

He kōrero mōu: About you

We’re looking for a parks, recreation or planning professional with more than five years’ experience who wants to further develop their skills in research, report writing, planning, and mana whenua and community engagement. You will relish the opportunity to influence community and open space outcomes across the council.

Mana whenua and community consultation will sit within your existing interest and practice as this is our bread and butter. We need to create a space for local boards, Auckland Council, mana whenua and communities to engage in the future planning and management of our parks, open spaces and community buildings to meet the needs of Aucklanders.

You will have strong stakeholder and relationship management skills and ability to give quality advice and work constructively within a diverse political environment.

Knowledge of the Reserves Act and how the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi impact planning and decision-making on parks would be highly advantageous.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

Join a team with a thriving workplace culture that offers flexible working conditions and prioritises your wellbeing. If you’re looking to use your strategic, analytical, and creative skills to improve outcomes for Aucklanders, this fixed-term / secondment role could be the ideal opportunity.
