Auckland Emergency Management has an opportunity for a permanent full-time Senior Exercises Advisor to join this driven and dedicated team. Reporting to the Capability Manager you will be based in the Auckland city centre with some flexibility to work from home or a Council hub. 

 

Effective emergency response hinges on the ability to act with precision and preparedness. This role is essential for driving the development, implementation, and oversight of our exercise programme, ensuring our teams are equipped for all types of scenarios. 

 

We are committed to continuous improvement, leveraging a lessons-learned approach and targeted training interventions to enhance our response capabilities.

 

This role will be required to participate in the Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) on call and stand-by emergency response system, including participating in the 24/7 duty team roster and be required to support emergency response during activation to provide capability to a variety of function leads under the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) structure.

 

You could expect to work on:
•    Provide robust advice and share best practice training & exercise programmes with other CDEM Groups, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency.  
•    Lead capability initiatives in the exercise and scenario space, capturing learnings and implementing improvement. 
•    Represent Auckland Emergency Management on National Exercise Forums and working groups.
•    Help drive the development of capability-raising resources.

We’re looking for someone with a strategic mindset and clear communication skills, capable of turning complex situations into simple, practical plans. In this role, you’ll support ongoing skill development, hands-on training, and process improvement.

 

The ideal candidate has solid experience running practical exercises, leading debriefs, conducting evaluations, and holding retrospectives to assess and enhance capabilities.

Staying calm under pressure and handling challenging environments are key qualities to be successful in this position.

 

We are specifically looking for:
•    7+ years relevant experience in capability development or related field.
•    Experience in running exercises or practical scenarios to test capability or readiness. 
•    Working knowledge of the principles of the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) preferred.
