He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We’re looking for a sharp, adaptable Senior Advisor Programmes to help deliver some of Auckland Council’s most exciting economic development initiatives. Sitting within the Economic Development Office, this role works closely with the Principal Advisor across a varied portfolio that includes the sector-specific funds, economic master planning for priority growth areas in south and north-west Auckland, and bespoke projects that respond to emerging opportunities across the organisation. No two days will look the same—you'll move between strategy, investment, stakeholder engagement, analysis, and delivery, helping turn ideas into practical programmes that support businesses, communities, mana whenua, and Auckland’s wider economic future.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the design and delivery of high-value economic development programmes, including the day-to-day coordination of the sector specific Fund; related governance management and its contestable investment process.
- Contributing to economic master planning and impact assessment work through research, data analysis, evidence gathering, stakeholder engagement, and strategic advice.
- Leading bespoke, fast-moving projects from concept through to delivery, ensuring clear planning, strong coordination, and quality outputs.
- Building trusted relationships across Council, crown, industry, and key partners, while supporting advice, reporting, and Māori outcomes through te ao Māori perspectives.

He kōrero mōu: About you
This role will suit someone with strong consulting or advisory skills who can bring structure, clarity, and commercial thinking to complex economic development work. Strong analytical capability is essential, with the ability to interpret economic and financial information, assess investment opportunities, monitor milestones, identify risks, and turn data into clear return-on-investment narratives. You’ll also be a confident communicator who can shift easily between writing reports, memos, briefings, and updates for a range of internal and external stakeholders. Because the work is varied and fast-moving, a proactive and adaptable approach is key, along with sound project or programme management skills and the ability to respond quickly to emerging priorities.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in finance, business, economics, or a related field, with strong financial and commercial understanding.
- Experience in an economic, financial, consulting, or advisory role, ideally gained within a mid-sized or large consulting environment, or a similarly complex organisation.
