Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions department has a 6x month fixed term opportunity as a Programme Advisor within Community WasteWise team.

Te hiranga o tēnei mahi | Why this role matters
This role plays a vital part in shaping a more sustainable future for Tāmaki Makaurau. You will lead the delivery of behaviour change and community empowerment initiatives aligned with the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) at both local and regional levels. You’ll work closely with community partners and collaborate across the Waste Solutions unit to plan and deliver programmes using a community empowerment approach.
These initiatives may include:
- Zero waste events
- Composting
- Recycling education
- Cloth nappies
- Other household waste minimisation topics
You’ll also support the implementation of the Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund and contribute to campaigns for new services and initiatives in targeted local board areas.

In this dynamic role, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering impactful waste minimisation programmes across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Your day-to-day work may include:
- Continuously developing and delivering programmes by nurturing strong partnerships within local priority areas
- Managing relationships with community organisations that promote behaviour change across the region
- Overseeing contracts and ensuring all programmes are delivered within agreed budgetary parameters
- Driving collaboration and innovation by identifying opportunities to improve processes, approaches, and efficiencies
- Working closely with the Communications & Marketing team and the Customer & Operations team to ensure cohesive and effective programme delivery

This role calls for a confident communicator and collaborator who excels in stakeholder engagement and shares our zero-waste vision. You’ll connect with diverse communities to drive meaningful change, and bring a positive, team-focused attitude with the ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Strong decision-making is key, as you’ll manage calendars and priorities for key stakeholders and programme leads, often requiring independent judgement and clear communication.
We’re looking for someone with:
- A relevant diploma in social science, behaviour change, environmental science, community engagement, or equivalent experience (minimum 5 years)
- Strong stakeholder relationship management skills and ability to influence suppliers and partners
- Project management experience (preferred)
- Minimum 4 years’ experience delivering behaviour change or complex service delivery programmes, ideally in waste, sustainability, or community empowerment
- Business acumen – ability to use data to understand and improve project outcomes
- A valid, clean full NZ driver’s licence
