He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Engineering, Assets and Technical Advisory department is seeking an experienced Principal Structural Engineer.

This is a pivotal role that provides high-level structural engineering expertise across Auckland Council. You will play a critical part in ensuring engineering assessments and advice align with industry best practice, statutory requirements, and regulatory standards. 

In addition, you will provide expert structural engineering advice on complex and high-profile council projects, contribute to the development of engineering standards and best practice, and help drive consistent, high-quality engineering outcomes across the organisation.

You can expect to:

• provide technical leadership within the Building Consent process, ensuring structural engineering assessments are technically robust, meet statutory timeframes, and uphold the highest standards of public safety and regulatory compliance
• deliver expert structural engineering advice and independent peer reviews across complex and high-profile council projects, influencing the quality, resilience, and long-term performance of Auckland's built infrastructure
• provide specialist engineering advice to internal stakeholders, project teams, and decision-makers on complex structural engineering matters
• mentor, coach, and support the professional development of engineers across the organisation, fostering technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and a culture of continuous improvement
   

You will be based in our office in the Auckland City Centre and we offer some flexibility to work from home or at other council offices.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You have extensive experience in the structural engineering field, with a strong background in design, peer review, seismic assessments, and construction monitoring across residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

In addition, we will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

• a Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering
• CPEng status or demonstrate equivalent capability to operate at the CPEng level
• a deep understanding of New Zealand’s building legislation, including the Building Act, Building Code, Health and Safety at Work Act (2015), and relevant engineering standards and codes of practice
• proficiency in relevant structural engineering software packages is essential
• expertise in evaluating complex building consent applications and providing high-quality structural engineering advice
• demonstrate excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service

This role has a remuneration range of $140,000 to $155,000

Our employer Kiwisaver contribution is additional to base salary offered.
