He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

Auckland Council’s Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO) has an opportunity for a Principal Landscape Architect to join the Design and Placemaking team on a fixed term, full-time contract from January 2026 to 18 December 2026.

This is a critical role supporting the delivery of the City Centre Masterplan and other regeneration programmes across Tāmaki Makaurau. The role provides design leadership to ensure high-quality urban design and public realm outcomes that enhance Auckland’s identity and liveability.

 

This is a hybrid position.

 

You could expect to work on:

  • Providing design leadership and strategic input across urban regeneration projects, with a focus on the City Centre.
  • Leading design quality from visioning through to detailed design and delivery.
  • Managing external design consultants and ensuring collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Reviewing and advising on public realm design proposals to achieve the best outcomes for the city.
  • Partnering with mana whenua and internal teams to embed place-led and regenerative design principles.

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

This role requires experience in Landscape Architecture and Public Realm Design. You will have worked in similar roles within large, complex, or public sector environments.

 

We are looking for someone with:

  • 8+ years’ experience in landscape architecture across a range of urban projects — from concept to construction.Landscape architecture degree ideally with a second qualification in urban
    design or significant vocational experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead design conversations across disciplines.
  • Knowledge of public realm best practice, including town centre and streetscape design.
  • Understanding of local government frameworks, legislation, and consenting processes.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Interest or experience in regenerative and sustainable design approaches.

 

A full and clean NZ Driver’s Licence is preferred.
