At Auckland Council, we are committed to creating a resilient and sustainable future for our communities. Our Healthy Waters Design Office team plays a crucial role in designing and delivering innovative stormwater infrastructure solutions that enhance flood resilience and environmental sustainability.


We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Principal to join our Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience department sitting in our Design Office team. As a subject matter expert in complex stormwater project design, you will provide technical leadership to ensure our designs align with industry best practices and deliver cost-effective, safe, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide expertise in design, value engineering, constructability, risk management, safety in design, and contract management.
  • Collaborate across Healthy Waters, Council departments, and the supply chain to share best practices and foster continuous improvement.
  • Fulfil roles such as Engineer to Contract, Engineer’s Representative, Contract Administrator, or Independent Certifier on complex NZS391(X) construction contracts.
  • Coach and mentor team members in the design and delivery of stormwater projects.
  • Represent Council at technical forums and conferences, presenting papers and participating in panels.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and promote a culture of ongoing development and innovation.

He kōrero mōu: About you


You are a recognised industry leader in infrastructure design and delivery, with expertise in designing and constructing complex stormwater projects. You have extensive experience in administering and managing complex NZS391(X) construction contracts and a strong background in risk management, constructability, and safety in design. 


Your excellent communication skills enable you to provide technical leadership, collaborate effectively, and engage with the industry. Additionally, you are experienced in coaching and mentoring, with strong interpersonal skills that foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.


We will also be looking for the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil / Environmental) or equivalent tertiary qualification.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards full membership.
  • 10 – 15+ years in three waters infrastructure design.
  • Full NZ drivers’ license.
