He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council has an exciting permanent and full-time opportunity for a Principal Advisor – Business Continuity and Crisis Management to support the Resilience and Insurance Manager and the Risk and Assurance team.
The role is a key part in building our organisational resilience by partnering with departments to develop and maintain business continuity and crisis management plans. As both a technical expert and a collaborative facilitator, the role focusses on supporting the crisis management team and business units in enhancing their preparedness for, and ability to respond to, disruptions. The ideal candidate will combine strong knowledge of continuity planning with excellent interpersonal skills to build capability and embed resilience across the organisation.
You could expect to:
- Review, update and rollout the business continuity management policy and framework.
- Lead Business Impact Analyses (BIAs) and risk assessments for departments to identify critical functions and recovery strategies.
- Build and maintain relationships with departments to assess continuity risks in major projects and procurements.
- Develop, maintain and rollout crisis management packs to the crisis management team
- Lead desktop and simulation exercises with senior leadership, elected members (including the mayor’s office) where appropriate, to validate plans and improve crisis leadership confidence

The renumeration range for the role is $120,000– $160,000 depending on skillset and experience.
He kōrero mōu: About you
The ideal candidate will bring over 10 years of experience in business continuity, crisis management, or organisational resilience within large, complex, and politically influenced environments. You will have at least 2 years of hands-on experience leading and embedding business continuity frameworks across an organisation.
Your expertise includes the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of continuity and crisis plans aligned with industry best practices.
You are confident navigating complexity, influencing stakeholders, and building resilience capability across all levels of an organisation. You learn from challenges and bring sound judgment and effective decision-making to support a culture of preparedness and continuous improvement. With strong written communication skills, you produce clear, high-quality guidance and documentation.
We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:
- A degree in Business Management or equivalent professional experience.
- In-depth knowledge of ISO 22301 (Business Continuity Management Systems) and best practices in continuity planning, development, and maintenance.
- Strong understanding of ISO 31000 (Risk Management – Principles and Guidelines) and its application in a business continuity context.
- Proven experience in designing and delivering training sessions and facilitating workshops to build organisational capability.
- Excellent facilitation, stakeholder engagement, and coaching skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a large and complex organisation.
