There are many fascinating and complex issues arising from Auckland’s growth and population diversity.  Apply your critical thinking skills to help develop policy that tackle these issues.  


Join a department that is Auckland Council's lead policy advisor on social wellbeing, regulatory practice, community investment and culture and diversity.


As a professional with demonstrated on-the-job policy experience you will both support and lead work that provides high quality policy advice to decision-makers.


You will enjoy engaging and connecting with Auckland’s diverse communities, navigating the political environment, and will get satisfaction from analysis, problem solving and providing evidence-based solutions.  You will participate in initiatives to embed te ao Māori into the way we do things.


Current vacancies are within the following teams and here are some examples of the work we do: 


  • Social Wellbeing team - we work on removing the barriers to Aucklanders leading thriving lives. Examples of programmes that we lead include affordable housing, homelessness, Smokefree, gambling, and alcohol harm reduction. 
  • Regulatory Practice team – we work on regulatory approaches that help Aucklanders to be a good neighbour, have human-animal bonds, protect public health, provide opportunities to business and create vibrant and safe public places.  This includes developing, reviewing and monitoring local government bylaws that help achieve the strategic directions of Auckland Council.

Tertiary qualified in public policy, public health, social sciences or law, we will value your passion and enthusiasm for building a career in policy.  Your core skill will be the ability to think critically and strategically and write effectively and concisely.  You are keen to further develop your analytical and research skills and are a natural at engaging and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

Your career history may have seen you working in a policy development or public health role for central/local government or in the non-government sector, or a legal role, where you have developed a good understanding of the issues facing communities. You have lots of initiative and can effectively organise and manage your work commitments to meet project objectives and deadlines.
