There are over 4,000 local parks across the city. Our parks network is diverse and ranges from coastal and beach reserves to neighbourhood parks and bush reserves. Responding to growth is a key focus area to ensure that Council caters for the increased demand on open space.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Planning Team Leader who will provide the direction for the Parks Sport and Recreation (PSR) view of parks and open spaces in statutory RMA planning processes. The role has 10 direct reports including Senior Parks Planners, Parks Planners, Landscape Advisers and a Principal Specialist that work together passionately to deliver high quality open space and recreation outcomes.

As the Parks Planning Team Leader, you’ll lead your team to coordinate parks planning input into small and large-scale growth and infrastructure development projects, to ensure that high quality integrated open space outcomes are achieved through RMA processes. You’ll identify opportunities to build strong, customer-focussed relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Regulatory Services, Community Facilities, Local Boards and the wider community. At the forefront of your work will be a drive to build a positive, high-performance team culture dedicated to technical excellence and continuous improvement.

He kōrero mōu: About you

This is an excellent opportunity for someone that is either an experienced open space planner looking to build on their leadership skills, or an established planning team leader that is looking for a new challenge.

We’d like to see some experience leading, coaching and supporting planners and other specialists, and experience in parks and open space planning and the Reserves Act is strongly desirable. You’ll also demonstrate:

  • 8+ years' post-graduation, broader based experience in planning and resource consent processes in a local government, central government and/or consultancy environment
  • A strong relationship builder and negotiator, you will have strong customer focus and a dedication to technical excellence
  • Strong experience of delivering results and innovation in a high public profile environment would be advantageous
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of tikanga and Te Reo
