There are over 4,000 local parks across the city. Our parks network is diverse and ranges from coastal and beach reserves to neighbourhood parks and bush reserves. Responding to growth is a key focus area to ensure that Council caters for the increased demand on open space.


He angitūtanga: The opportunity


We’re seeking a Parks Planner for an exciting opportunity within our team, where you’ll represent the Parks Sport and Recreation (PSR) view of parks, open space, recreation and sport for statutory and consent processes. The role is one of 3 Parks Planner positions within the Parks Planning Team, which is a team of 11 that also includes Senior Parks Planners and Specialists, and reports to the Parks Planning Team Leader. 

You’ll work as part of a team to deliver high quality open space outcomes within RMA processes that relate to growth and development, and receive mentoring and support from senior members of staff to build your skills and confidence. This is an excellent opportunity for someone that is passionate about open space and parks and wants to take the next step in their planning career. 

There’s opportunity to work on complex and notified resource consent applications, Notice of Requirement processes, reporting to Local Boards and to develop your stakeholder relationship skills in an expert planning input space. Opportunities abound!

He kōrero mōu: About you


To be considered for this opportunity, you’ll need to demonstrate:

•    A tertiary qualification in policy, planning, parks and open space management or land use planning or in a relevant field
•    Minimum 2 years experience, preferably  with resource consents applications, and broader based experience in planning and policy in a local government, central government and/or consultancy environment is also desirable
•    Demonstrated experience in the Reserves Act, Building Act and Resource Management Act is essential
•    Experience of a local government organisation and associated political environment
•    High level of customer focus and track record of customer delivery
•    Strong experience of delivering results and innovation in a high public profile environment
•    Good understanding and working knowledge of tikanga and Te Reo
