Established in 1888, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is New Zealand’s leading visual arts experience with more than 17,000 artworks in its collection. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Gallery explore the largest collection of New Zealand art in the world and discover outstanding works by Māori and Pacific Island artists, as well as international painting, sculpture and print collections dating from the 11th century to today.
He angitūtanga: The opportunity
The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki invites applications for the part-time position of Conservator, Paintings.
The Conservator would be expected to work as part of a team comprising four conservators: two specialising in the area of works of art on paper, one in paintings conservation and one in objects conservation. Responsibilities include the conservation of paintings from the Auckland Art Gallery’s permanent collections, assisting in loans, acquisitions and work generated by the Gallery’s exhibitions programmes.
The Conservator, Paintings, is responsible to the Principal Conservator who coordinates the activities of the Department.

In this 24 hour per week role, our ideal candidate will be:
- Highly motivated and capable of contributing to planning and implementing of a conservation programme.
- A recognised qualification in conservation.
- A good understanding of cultural conservation principles and ethics.
- Relevant conservation work experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
