Title:  Objects / Time-based Media Conservator

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) is Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s cultural, events and destination agency. It is an Auckland Council-controlled organisation that works to make Auckland a vibrant place to live and visit, through events, experiences and taonga (treasures).   

He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is the guardian of one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant art collections, valued at over $460 million. We are seeking an experienced Objects / Time-based Media Conservator to play a critical role in the long-term care, preservation, and presentation of this nationally important collection.

This is a senior specialist role where your expertise will directly influence the longevity, value, and readiness for display of historical and contemporary artworks, including complex installations and time-based media. You will work closely with curators, artists, technicians, and external partners, and contribute to the Gallery’s reputation as a leader in conservation practice in New Zealand and internationally.

This role is permanent, full time.

He kōrero mōu: About you
•    You will bring a recognised tertiary qualification in Cultural Materials, Heritage Conservation or Material Science, specialising in objects, sculpture, contemporary art, or time-based media.
•    With at least five years’ conservation experience in a museum or gallery environment, you will have a strong track record in both preventive and remedial conservation, including the complex treatment and management of unique artworks and time-based media. 
•    We also require someone who is confident working in a conservation laboratory, knowledgeable in chemical handling and Health & Safety protocols, and experienced in independent research, accurate documentation, and adhering to cultural conservation principles and ethics.

The salary for this role is between NZ $88,528 and NZ $ 104,438, based on skillset and experience.
