He angitūtanga: The opportunity 
Join the team at the New Zealand Maritime Museum – Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa, a place where Aotearoa’s maritime stories come to life. Located on Hobson Wharf in the Viaduct, we’re looking for enthusiastic Museum Assistants to join our Visitor Services Team in ongoing casual roles.

 

This is not just a summer job – we’re looking for people who are committed to staying on with us. Christmas and New Year is our busiest period, so availability then is essential.

 

As the welcoming face of the museum, you’ll help visitors with tickets, retail sales, and vessel trips, while also supporting events and programmes that showcase our maritime stories.

 

You could expect to work on:

  • Greeting and assisting visitors at front-of-house
  • Selling tickets, memberships, merchandise, and vessel trips
  • Supporting events, public programmes, and family activities
  • Ensuring a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment
  • Sharing knowledge of the local area and museum offerings

We’re looking for people who are friendly, proactive, and thrive in a busy visitor-focused environment.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Experience in customer service, tourism, or hospitality
  • Cash handling experience
  • Great communication skills and the ability to anticipate visitor needs
  • A positive, flexible approach, with attention to detail
  • A willingness to grow your understanding of te ao Māori and incorporate te reo and tikanga into your mahi
