Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Gallery is pleased to announce the Marylyn Mayo internship opportunity to develop the skills of emerging and early career visual arts professionals. This paid internship is intended to provide a valuable learning opportunity and develop the skills of people committed to pursuing a career in art galleries and museums. The 2026 Marylyn Mayo Intern will undertake research into Auckland Art Gallery’s extensive Colin McCahon collection in conjunction with the Colin McCahon Legacy Project.

 

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

You are passionate about art from Aotearoa New Zealand and keen to pursue a career working in the art gallery and museum sector. You have strong oral and written communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment. You have a strong interest in the work of Colin McCahon and the times in which he lived, experience working with collection records, and strong art writing skills.

 

Applicants will demonstrate the following attributes:

 

  • A tertiary qualification in Art History, Curatorial Studies, Museums Studies, or relevant field.
  • Passion for twentieth century New Zealand art and interest in New Zealand art history
  • Experience working in a support role to curators or academics as an intern or research assistant is desirable.
  • A record of published writing on art is desirable.
  • Experience keeping detailed records, especially in relation to artworks and their related exhibition histories.
  • Experience using collection management software (preferably Vernon CMS) is desirable.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
