We have an exceptional fixed-term opportunity through to the end of April 2027 for an accomplished financial policy leader to shape how Auckland Council funds the services and infrastructure that matter to Tāmaki Makaurau.
Reporting to the General Manager Funding and Financial Policy, you will lead a team of seven specialists providing expert advice across rates, infrastructure funding and financing levies, development contributions, fees and charges, and other revenue sources.
Your leadership will ensure our financial policies are legally sound, evidence-based, fair and transparent, while supporting the council’s strategic direction and earning the confidence of decision-makers and stakeholders.
Day-to-day you could expect to work on:
- Leading the development and review of key financial policies
- Delivering timely advice backed by robust research and modelling
- Providing specialist revenue and funding advice to key stakeholders
- Managing legislative obligations, controls and financial policy risk
- Building the capability and technical expertise of a team of seven
- Improving processes and supporting change across the business

He kōrero mōu: About you
This is a senior leadership opportunity for a strategic thinker who combines deep financial policy expertise with sound judgement, influence and a highly collaborative approach. You will be comfortable navigating complex and competing priorities, translating technical analysis into clear recommendations, and building trusted relationships with executives, elected members, and internal and external stakeholders.
Equally important will be your ability to coach and develop policy professionals, foster an inclusive team culture, and strengthen confidence and capability in te ao Māori, tikanga Māori, te reo Māori and te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Specifically, we are looking for:
- A tertiary qualification in economics or public policy, ideally postgraduate
- At least 10 years’ senior experience in financial policy and funding
- Expert public sector policy analysis and collaborative policy development skills
- Strong knowledge of taxation principles and revenue policy impacts
- Proven leadership, coaching, communication and stakeholder influence
- Local government funding knowledge and commercial experience are advantageous
