Ngā Pātaka Kōrero o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Libraries) is a place of learning, connection and discovery, where high‑quality collection description is essential to how knowledge is found and used.
We are seeking a Librarian – Metadata & Discovery with a development focus on building metadata expertise for Heritage resources. This permanent, full‑time role is based at Auckland Central Library Monday to Friday - and is well suited to an emerging specialist librarian ready to grow their skills working with rare, unique and significant collections. You’ll be supported to build specialist strength in heritage cataloguing and metadata practice within a busy, collaborative operational team, with time and guidance to develop confidence and professional judgement. As your capability grows, you’ll describe culturally significant materials with care and accuracy, review and improve complex and legacy records, and gain insight into how metadata supports discovery, stewardship, and the customer and researcher experience across catalogues and discovery layers.

You bring solid operational skills and a strong interest in metadata and Heritage collections. You value standards and consistency, and you’re curious about how metadata shapes discovery, meaning and research use.
You will bring:

Care and accuracy in working with data and systems, with some experience or interest in metadata standards and tools, including RBMS Controlled vocabularies for describing Heritage materials

Curiosity about research, heritage collections, discovery systems, and culturally responsive description, including Nga Upoko Tukutuku
-
A willingness to learn, ask questions, and build capability over time, including developing understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and reparative practice

A collaborative, relationship‑focused approach, with openness to new technologies and ways of working
You’ll also hold a recognised library qualification (or relevant tertiary qualification).
Ngā mahi matua: What you’ll be doing
This role combines core metadata operations with the development of specialist expertise.
You will:

Create, maintain, review, and enhance accurate metadata across a range of formats, including complex and legacy records

Apply established metadata standards consistently, undertaking authority control and quality assurance checks

Contribute to documentation, continuous improvement initiatives, and the effective use of Auckland Libraries’ discovery layer

Build advanced skills in the description and enrichment of Heritage collections metadata

Apply ethical, cultural, and contextual considerations in metadata practice

Collaborate with colleagues across the wider Regional Library and Learning Services Unit

The salary range for this role is between $76-$89k per annum, based on skills & experience.
